COMMODORE’S CORNER
Spring 2012
Wow, Cathie pointed out the countdown, 31 days to Spring :-)
Welcome to the new year for Tall Oaks Yacht Club as we enter the 2012 launch season. The “Bridge” met and 'hammered out' dates for this season's activities, which include; cruises, monthly races with after-race socials, and the annual Challenge Cup Race. Our four cruises will be: Metedeconk, Cruise the Bay, Tuckerton Seaport, and a repeat to Long Island Sound/Block Island (there are several groups showing interest). Since the Dingy Races were a hit, there will be a repeat challenge. There will be new excursions to Myers Hole for a beach picnic/fire and local watering holes. I understand that the old ' Windows on the Bay' has reopened with a new name with moorings to be available :-))
Of course there will be clams, pizza, London Broil, burgers and dogs, the Octoberfest, and this year we will have a pig roast! In addition, Cedar Mar Yacht Club has their annual symposium at Cattus Island.
Our racing program has been growing in participation in the last couple of years. Dennis has slipped in an extra race, providing for 5 opportunities to get in shape for the “big race” with Windjammers. Now that we have the Challenge Cup back we need to hone our skills to keep it. All persons that have a desire to race their boats or crew are always welcome.
Information about each cruise is available on the yacht club website, TOYC.ORG and emails are sent to everyone prior to each event. In addition, there are local events that will be announced and posted on the website as we hear about them.
We now have a new burgee with flags and stickers that will last more than a season. The logo is now available by a vendor for clothing items.
Special kudos go out to Cathie Allison (Webmaster) for her work on the website. Please contact Cathie to have your articles/announcements/links included on the web page.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the April 14th Tall Oaks Yacht Club bi-annual Luncheon/Meeting at the Captain's Inn with a "water" view, as well as our summer socials and activities.
Dwell on the beauty of the journey rather than the destination :-)

Fall 2011
Parties this year were hosted by John and Cathie Allison with help from Diane Fell and Jane Smith, Bill Hunsinger, Nick and Eddy Fry, John and Karen Gustavsen, and Ray McCann and Patty Augustine.
Cruises were directed by Dennis Smith, Randy and Kristin Vogel, Beth and Paul Hayden, and Bill Hunsinger. New this year were the dinghy races by Mike Nickens and Philomena Roselli.
We had good wind for the sail with many boats for the cruise to Metedeconk River and for once back down the bay to Forked River.
The summer cruise to the Sound started as a run straight to Block Island. We had good weather for our night run up the coast. At 3 :00 AM thought one member report fish jumping out of the water and hissing at him in the Jupiter beam!! We came back down the Sound with Free at Last doing a fast day from Throng Neck to Myers Hole. Drac Verd had a 42 mile beam reach from Sandy Hook to old Barney.
Beth and Paul’s Cruise the Bay was again a success starting with lunch at the Waters Edge Restaurant after a night anchored out and ending three days later at Conklin Island.
We retained the coveted Challenge Cup for the second year. Captain John Kudera on Fifty-Fifty and his crew worked as an efficient, well oiled team of salts took top honors crossing the line on corrected time ahead of their nearest rival. In addition, Tall Oaks Yacht Club boats Escapade captained by Steve Zuzic, Bay Rhumb captained by Dave Wagner, Lickety Split captained by Mike Nickens, Picante captained by Roberto Weimann and Zig-Zag captained by Paul Hayden crossed the line in supportive positions. Granted, the handicaps helped, but not without a few good captains and crew.
Windjammers hosted the after-party. Libations abounded and a good time was had by all. The Windjammers Yacht Club members were gracious in their loss and vowed to return next year. The challenge is on and we will be ready.
Winning the cup was a great end to an oft exciting but challenging season. The racing fleet has built over the season with several new boat crews ready to sign up for next year. The aftermath of prepping for Hurricane Irene canceled our annual Labor Day weekend cruise again, but brought together potential new members as we enjoyed dockside food and fun.
Our fall luncheon at the Captains Inn watching the palm fronds waving a farewell for the season was a very nice end of season time. Ron LeNeve from North Sails gave us tips on main sail trim for next year. Only 136 days until launch, but who is counting?
Our Burgee contest had the fall luncheon attendees unanimously selecting Paul Adison's design for the new TOYC flag. Its robust construction by North Flags promise many seasons of service.
But alas, all good things come to an end, as does our 2011 summer season. Members have set sail southward toward the winter sun or boats are lifted onto dry land. To all, we wish you a great winter season and look forward to seeing you at the luncheon in April.

Spring 2011
As I write this I observe the Spring counter, 62 days to Spring!
Welcome to the new year for Tall Oaks Yacht Club as we enter the 2011 launch season. On February 12th, the “Bridge” will meet to plan the yacht club’s seasonal activities, which will tentatively include; four cruises, monthly races with an after race social and the annual Challenge Cup race. Our four (4) cruises will be: Metedaconk, Paul and Beth’s “Cruise-the-Bay”, Long Island Sound/Block Island cruise, and a cruise to Tuckerton Seaport. Of course there will be clams, pizza, London Broil, BLTs, the Octoberfest celebration, and ‘burgers and 'dogs. In addition, the Cattus Island Seminar is open to all members and their guests.
Please contact me before the meeting if you have an idea for additional activities and it will be brought before the Bridge for consideration.
Our racing program has been growing in participation in the last couple of years. Now that we have the Challenge Cup back, we need to hone our skills in order to keep the prize! All persons that have a desire to race their boats or crew for someone else are welcomed.
Information about each cruise is available on the yacht club’s web site, TOYC.ORG. In addition, there are local events that will be announced and posted on the web site as we hear about them.
Once again special thanks go out to Cathie Allison (Webmaster) for her work on the web site. Please contact Cathie to have your articles, announcements, or links included on the web page. We encourage and look forward to member participation.
I hope to see you at the April 9th Tall Oaks Yacht Club Spring Luncheon/Meeting as well as our Summer socials and activities.
Enjoy the beauty of the journey rather than the destination!
