The Challenge Cup

How It All Began

by Bob Wexler

Windjammers’ 1990 Race Chairman

It all started when Bill Whitman and Steve Zuzic approached me to have a joint race in August that would be part of each of our club’s race series.  We could not work out the logistics at the time.  WJ has two classes and handicaps the races based on time, while TO has one lass and handicaps their races based on distance.  We all agreed that a joint race should be held and we decided on September 29th to be a one race “Challenge”.  Both clubs chipped in for a perpetual trophy, which would be held by the winning team until the following years race.

The race was scored much like our race series, with points being assigned to each club equal to where each of their boats finished in the race.  The club with the least number of points is the winner.  Because this system requires that an equal number of boats be scored for each club, the club with the most boats in the race gets to “throw out” their later place finishers until they have the same number of boats as the club with the smaller number of boats.

Below are the results of yesterday’s (September 29th) race, which was the “Tall Oaks – Windjammers Challenge Cup”, an inter-club race between ourselves (Tall Oaks) and the Windjammers Sailing Club at Cedar Creek marina.  The results were as follows:

Score:

Windjammers:1+3+5+6+7 = 22

Tall Oaks:2+4+8+9+10 = 33

Thank you to all of the skippers and their crews who were out there yesterday and did us proud.  We may have lost the trophy for this year but we most certainly gave them a run for the money, and had an excellent race besides.  Conditions were ideal, with a steady 15 knot south wind, and a comfortable temperature. This was our longest race of the season at 12.9nm.  After the race, many of us went to Cedar Creek Marina for the award ceremony and a barbecue, which was a good time for all.

This was an excellent “first of a kind” event for our club, and we hope everyone ha a great time.  Congratulations to the Windjammers in their victory, and we look forward to another fun and exciting challenge race next year.
